January 21, 2010, the first tornado of the 2010 year in the Huntsville area struck without warning at 5:30 in the afternoon. It started with minimal damage in the area of 8th and Triana, just south of Governor’s Drive. Crossing Memorial Parkway, there was minor damage to the Times Building in Downtown Huntsville. Then, disaster struck as the tornado achieved full EF2 strength of 115+ miles per hour in the historic Five Points area along Andrew Jackson Way, Oakwood Avenue, and Maysville Road. There was extensive damage to houses and businesses in the area. However, there was amazingly enough only minor injuries to approximately 3 people. The tornado dissipated east of Huntsville between U.S. 72 and Winchester Road east of Moores Mill Road. This was a dangerous storm, and an indicator of the type of storms that can be expected this storm season.
