My little boy just loves a DVD called “The Alphabet Train”, produced by a company in Indiana called Railway Productions and available through such retailers as Amazon.com and Wal-Mart. This DVD, which runs around 30 minutes in length, takes children from A-to-Z with video footage of trains accompanied by words describing the parts of the train seen in the video footage. This video does not feature any cartoon characters or fancy music, just video footage of different types of trains with words such as “Engine”, “Brakeman”, and “Signal” accompanying the footage. Each word is described with a short verbal description of its function in the train by the narrator. This video, produced in 1998, should be as much a part of a child’s library today as the day that it was produced.
